# Prompts

> Prompts are the questions Jam asks AI assistants for you. Choose them, edit them, and stay within your plan's capacity.

A prompt is a question a buyer asks an AI assistant, like "best invoicing tool for small agencies". Jam asks every tracked prompt on every platform on every scan.

## Prompt capacity

Your plan sets how many prompts you can track, from 50 to 1,000 in steps of 50. `get_prompt_cap` shows the cap and how much room is left. Adding past the cap is refused.

## Topics and personas

Every prompt has a `topic` (prompts without one go under "General") and a `persona`. The API also accepts `control`, which setup treats like `branded`.

| Persona | Who asks it |
| - | - |
| `discoverer` | Someone exploring the problem. The default. |
| `buyer` | Someone ready to choose a product. |
| `evaluator` | Someone comparing options in detail. |
| `competitor` | A question that names a competitor. Tracked, not scored. |
| `branded` | A question that names you. Tracked, not scored. |

Topic and persona are set when a prompt is added. Rewording a prompt keeps them; to change either, remove the prompt and add it again.

## Change what is tracked

Edit prompts on the dashboard's prompts page, or over the API and MCP:

| Do | Tools |
| - | - |
| Add one or many | `add_prompt`, `add_prompts_bulk` |
| Reword in place (history kept) | `edit_prompt`, `edit_prompts_bulk` |
| Replace (history reset) | `replace_prompt` |
| Pause or resume | `pause_prompt` |
| Stop tracking one, or a whole topic | `remove_prompt`, `remove_prompt_topic` |
| Ask Jam for more | `suggest_prompts`, then `get_prompt_suggestion` for progress |

`add_prompt` takes 3 to 500 characters and is safe to retry: a text the project already tracks answers `200` with `existing: true`. Setup (and agent connect) asks for 8 to 300 characters and at most 15 topics.

> [!TIP]
>
> Write prompts the way a buyer would type them, without your brand name.
> Branded and competitor questions are worth tracking, but they do not move your
> visibility score.
